Issei Sagawa, 73, died peacefully at his home on November 24, 2022. Issei was born on August 8, 1949 in Kobe, Japan. Issei Sagawa gained notoriety in 1981 for the murder of his classmate, Renée Hartevelt, which led to his arrest and subsequent removal from his postgraduate studies at the Sorbonne University. He was ultimately found not guilty at the subsequent trial by way of insanity. Issei had moved to Paris in 1971 to escape the turmoil of the Japanese student movement, and had obtained a degree from the university of Tokyo in engineering. He eventually settled in Tokyo, finding work as a lecturer, writer, and translator. Issei's life was marked by his bizarre activities and curious decisions. He enjoyed the dark side of life and often meditated on death and decay. He will be remembered and cherished by his close family and friends.
