We mourn the passing of beloved singer, songwriter and musician Israel Kamakawiwoʻole, who passed away on June 26, 1997 at the age of 38. Israel, known affectionately as “IZ”, was born on May 20, 1959. Born and raised in the Hawaiian islands, Israel's musical gifts flourished early on. He was a two-time winner of the Na Hoku Hanohano Award, Hawaii's version of the Grammy Awards. He was best known for his recording of the medley “Somewhere Over The Rainbow-What A Wonderful World”, which gained international fame in the 1990s. Israel was lauded for his compositional genius, as well as his wonderful singing and musical skill. His works continue to be deeply treasured by his family, friends, and countless fans worldwide. Israel is survived by his wife Marlene Kamakawiwoʻole and his two children. He will be deeply missed, and his music will remain with us forever as a powerful reminder of his great talent and joy.
