Isadora Duncan, renowned American dancer and founder of modern dance, passed away on September 14, 1927, at the age of 49. Born on May 27, 1877 to mining engineer Joseph Charles Duncan and pianist and music teacher Irma Duncan, Isadora was the sixth of the eight children in the Duncan family. As a child, Isadora practiced her mother's heavily classical style of dance, but later developed an unwavering passion for free-form, natural movement. With an emphasis on natural motion over external technique, and on individual expression over rigid classical structures, Isadora formed the foundation of modern dance. In addition to her fame as a dancer, Isadora was also a successful choreographer and teacher. As part of her routines and performances, Isadora often sang, recited her own poetry and often danced in the nude. By the turn of the century, her iconoclastic style of dance was seen in every western city. Isadora Duncan was a pioneer, a revolutionary and a beautiful spirit who leave behind an inspiration to both dancers and all of those who thought outside the box. She will be remembered and revered.
