Dr. Isaac Asimov, the legendary science fiction writer and educator, died on April 6th, 1992 at the age of 72. Born in the Soviet Union on January 2nd, 1920, Asimov immigrated with his family to the United States at the age of three and was raised in Brooklyn, New York. He attended Columbia University and obtained degrees in chemistry and biochemistry, and taught these subjects for a period of 15 years, beginning at Boston University and eventually moving to the position of biochemistry professor at the University of Boston Medical School, where he taught from 1951 to 1958. It was during this time that Asimov began writing, first as a hobby and eventually becoming a full-time career. His career began in the 1940s and he went on to write an astonishing number of books, including both fiction and non-fiction titles in a wide variety of genres. Asimov is best remembered for his science fiction works, which include his popular Foundation and Robot series. The Foundation trilogy, published in the early 1950s and spanning millions of years into the future, is considered a masterpiece of the genre and inspired generations of subsequent authors. Asimov was also an advocate for scientific literacy, writing numerous books and articles on science, history, philosophy, and religion throughout his lifetime. He was the recipient of multiple prestigious awards, including the Hugo Award and the Nebula Award. He was also a member of Mensa, and was inducted into the Science Fiction and Fantasy Hall of Fame in 1998. Asimov's influence in literature, science and culture cannot be overstated. He is fondly remembered by readers everywhere and loved by fans for his keen sense of wit and his unending commitment to science and education.
