Ingvar Kamprad, born on March 30, 1926, passed away on January 27, 2018 at the age of 91. He was a Swedish engineer and entrepreneur best known for founding IKEA, the furniture retail company, in 1943. Kamprad was raised on a farm outside Agunnaryd, Sweden and, known for his business acumen, began selling small items such as matches and pens from his bicycle from around the age of five. He soon began offering furniture assembled from kits in the 1950s and then began manufacturing his own furniture in the 1960s. He expanding the business to other countries in the 1970s and eventually opened IKEA stores in 35 countries. The flat-pack furniture and modern design of IKEA's products remain iconic and the company achieved great success under Kamprad's leadership. Kamprad was a recipient of numerous awards and recognitions, including the Sydsvenska Dagbladet Gold Medal in January 1987. He continued to serve as a senior advisor to IKEA until his death. Kamprad will be remembered for his achievements in business and his pioneering of innovative design.
