On July 30, 2007, Ingmar Bergman, internationally renowned Swedish filmmaker and playwright known for his masterful films examining faith, death, and modern life, died at the age of 89. Born in Uppsala, Sweden, in 1918, Bergman was the son of a priest and began his lifelong career in the Swedish film industry when he was only 20 viewers old. After working as a script writer and cinematographer, he eventually wrote and directed his own films and plays, which tackled topics such as existentialism and religion. Bergman was known for a number of acclaimed films, including The Seventh Seal, Wild Strawberries, and Persona, for which he won three Academy Awards and four Golden Globe Awards. He also received the French Legion of Honor, the BAFTA Award, and the Leopard of Honour award at the Cannes Film Festival. Aside from his film work, Bergman also wrote and directed stage and television plays. In his later years, Bergman succumbed to poor health and mostly retired from directing.He passed away on July 30, 2007. He is survived by his five children. Bergman will be remembered for his artistry, love of the film craft, and his bold works of art.
