Long-time British stage and screen actor Ian Holm, CBE, has died at the age of 88. He passed away peacefully on June 19, 2020. Holm's prodigious acting career spanned more than six decades and included a number of internationally acclaimed performances in theater, film, television, and radio. He had a knack for portraying complex characters and became best known for his hyper-realistic portrayals of psychologically troubled men. He first broke onto the scene in the 1960s with a series of lauded roles in British theater, and quickly transitioned to television and film when his career as a stage actor began to wane. His numerous film performances include memorable roles in such films as The Madness of King George (1993), Alien (1979), The Fifth Element (1997), and The Aviator (2004). His role as Sam in Chariots of Fire (1981) earned him an Academy Award nomination. Despite his renown as a performing actor, Holm was consistently praised by film critics and colleagues alike for his quiet generosity and unassuming demeanor. He is survived by his wife, Sophie de Stempel, and four children.
