It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Howard Cosell on April 23, 1995 at the age of 77. Howard Cosell was an American sports journalist, author, and radio and television broadcaster best known for his long-running partnership with ex-athlete Muhammad Ali. His career spanned over four decades and he was beloved by millions of viewers across the United States. Born in Winston-Salem, North Carolina in 1918, Cosell's passion for sports was fueled by his experiences growing up as a sports fan. He attended New York University, and soon began to pursue a career in sports journalism. In 1953, Cosell began working for ABC and developed a unique style of sports reporting. Through this style, Cosell gained notoriety and was an integral part of the sports broadcasting landscape. He was the first to break stories and to feature in-depth interviews. A notable milestone was his reporting on the fight at Madison Square Garden in 1966 between Muhammad Ali and Karl Mildenberger. Over the course of his career, Cosell won numerous awards, including the Emmy Awards, the Peabody Awards, and National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association's 'Sports Broadcaster' and 'Sports Journalist' of the Years awards. Cosell's legacy lives on in the many fans and admirers he leaves behind. He will be deeply missed by his wife, Emily, his four children and their families, and the legions of fans who admired him and his work.
