Howard Ashman (1950 - 1991) died on March 14, 1991, at the age of 40. He was a celebrated lyricist, playwright, and director who wrote music and lyrics for a number of shows, movies, and videos. He is best known for his successful collaborations with composer Alan Menken, including the songs from Disney’s Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, and Aladdin. He has also written songs for projects such as the film Shirleys Kids and the musical plays Little Shop of Horrors and Smile. During his career in show business, he also served as founder and Artistic Director of The WPA Theater in New York City, directed the Obie Award-winning musical God Bless You, Mr. Rosewater, and earned several Tony Award nominations. He won numerous awards, including multiple Drama Desk Awards, the Drama-Logue Award, and two Academy Awards. He is remembered by many for his enthusiasm in expressing the stories of his characters, and for the joy and beauty that his music brought to millions worldwide.
