Horatio Herbert Kitchener passed away peacefully on June 5, 1916, at the age of 65. Horatio Kitchener was one of the most famous soldiers and statesmen of the British Empire. He was born June 24, 1850, in County Kerry, Ireland. Early in his career, Kitchener was a soldier in the British Royal Engineers and achieved the rank of lieutenant general. He fought in numerous military campaigns and was a distinguished military leader in the Burmese Wars and Mahdist War. His role in the latter conflict was especially noteworthy as he accepted the surrender of the Mahdi himself. In 1911, Kitchener began his career as a statesman when he was appointed the Secretary of State for War for the United Kingdom. He was in that role when World War I began in 1914. Kitchener was a driving force in the recruitment of hundreds of thousands of men for the army and his famous call to arms “Your Country Needs You!” remains well-known. As a distinguished statesman and military leader, Kitchener left behind an impressive legacy. He was a beloved figure in many countries and is remembered for his courageous and selfless actions. He will be fondly remembered and deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
