Hattie McDaniel, an iconic actress and singer, died peacefully on October 26th, 1952 at her home in Los Angeles, California. She was 57 years old. McDaniel’s career spanned more than three decades, beginning with her first professional role at age 24. She was best known for her portrayal of Mammy in the 1939 classic film Gone with the Wind, for which she won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress, becoming the first African American to win an Oscar. McDaniel appeared in over 300 films, often playing characters in servitude. Despite her success in the film industry, much of her work was limited due to racial segregation in Hollywood. McDaniel was restricted to playing maids and other supporting roles. Throughout her life, McDaniel’s strength was celebrated and she was a vocal advocate of civil rights. Her passion and courage made her a role model for countless generations of actors. McDaniel will be remembered for her incredible talent, her determination, and her tireless efforts in making performing arts more accessible and inclusive.
