Harvey Milk, a pioneering LGBTQ Rights activist, died on November 27, 1978, in San Francisco at the age of 48. Milk was born in 1930 in Woodmere, New York, and attended Temple University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, graduating with a degree in mathematics in 1951. After that, he spent time in the military and some years working in New York, as well as some time in Dallas and San Francisco, before settling permanently in San Francisco in 1972. Once there, Milk became a powerful voice for the LGBTQ community and worked as a political advocate. He was the first openly gay person to be elected to public office in California, when he was voted in as a San Francisco County Supervisor in 1977. During his time in office, Milk championed gay rights and worked to improve the lives of the city’s gay residents. He became known as the “Mayor of Castro Street” for his activism. Milk was shot and killed in a double assassination in 1978 alongside San Francisco Mayor George Moscone. Milk’s life and legacy are remembered today, and his death led to a change of sentiment in the city and country that has since grown into a powerful and far reaching movement. He will be greatly missed.

There is a sacredness in tears. They are not the mark of weakness, but of power. They speak more eloquently than ten thousand tongues. They are the messengers of overwhelming grief, of deep contrition, and of unspeakable love. Washington Irving
