Harold Wilson, Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1964 to 1970 and from 1974 to 1976, died at the age of 79 on 24th May 1995. A Labour Party politician, Wilson was born in Huddersfield, Yorkshire, on 11th March 1916. As Prime Minister, Harold Wilson was responsible for a wide range of social and economic reforms. These included the introduction of Abolition of the Death Penalty Act, National Plan for Economic Development, Race Relations Act, the Open University, the Pension Schemes Act, and the Health and Safety at Work Act. These reforms had a lasting effect on the nation and helped shape the modern British society. After his second period as Prime Minister, Wilson resigned and was made a life peer in 1983. He was later appointed as Chancellor of the Open University and remained an active member of politics until his death. Wilson was passionate about democracy and social justice and was known for his optimism and intellect. His sense of humour and love of the arts were other traits of his legacy and achievements.
