Harold Pinter, an acclaimed English playwright, director and actor, died on December 24, 2008 at the age of 78. His works assisted in redefining the modern stage with a blend of poetry, power and intellectual depth that earned him the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2005. Some of his most celebrated plays include 'The Homecoming', 'Betrayal' and 'The Caretaker'. Throughout his career, he wrote 29 plays, five screenplays and directed or acted in various stage and film productions. He was also awarded an Order of Merit in 2002 by her Majesty the Queen in 2002. In addition to the prestigious Nobel prize, he was recipient of the Laurence Olivier Award, three Tony Awards and four BAFTAs. The British Council also honoured him by the International Man of the Year Award. As a voice for the voiceless, his passionate work and contribution to modern theatre will serve as an inspiration for fellow creatives.
