On June 1, 2002, Hansie Cronje, age 32, died suddenly in Bloemfontein, South Africa. Hansie was born on September 25, 1969 in Bloemfontein, South Africa and developed a passion for cricket from a young age. He went on to have an illustrious career, becoming the Captain of the South African cricket team, the Proteas, from 1994 – 2000. Over his career he embodied strength and determination to achieve his goals, demonstrating exceptional skills and tremendous talent through his record number of matches as captain. Hansie was admired for his leadership, believing that every individual should have "the right and opportunity to play cricket to the best of their ability". Despite his standing in the cricket world, he will be remembered for his close relationships with the people in his life and his generous spirit. Hansie is survived by his wife Bertha and their three children, daughter Jana and sons Frederik and Johan. He will forever remain in the hearts and minds of everyone who knew him.
