Hannah Arendt, renowned philosopher and political theorist, passed away on December 4, 1975, at the age of 69. Arendt was born in Linden, Germany in 1906 and earned her Ph.D. from the University of Heidelberg in 1921. She had a prolific career as a leading scholar in the areas of philosophy, history, and political science; becoming particularly well-known for her book, The Origins of Totalitarianism, published in 1951. In her expansive writings, she discussed topics ranging from the fundamentals of human nature and institutional power to the narrative of the rise of Nazism, and critically examined the nature of individual rights within society. Her enduring body of work includes the books On Revolution and The Human Condition and numerous articles and essays. Arendt's insights were revolutionary within the academic realm and continue to inspire new generations of political thinkers. She will be remembered for her courage in confronting difficult questions and for her philosophical innovations in the fields of ethics and political thought.
