American actor Hal Holbrook passed away on 2021-01-23 at the age of 95. Best known for his 50-year portrayal of Mark Twain in stage and television appearances, Holbrook's considerable body of work spanned a career of more than seven decades. Holbrook's first Broadway role came in 1955 portraying Reverend Adams in the Pulitzer Prize-winning play, "Journey From Johns". He made his film debut in 1967 in "The Group". His role in 1974's "The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman" earned him an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama. As Mark Twain, Holbrook was highly regarded for his thoughtful interpretations of the work of the iconic American humorist and is the only actor to have both voiced and performed live the Nobel Prize-winning novel "Heart of Darkness", adapting the work's narration into a stage show. Holbrook's five Emmy Award-winning performances of Mark Twain included "Mark Twain Tonight!", "In Search Of Mark Twain" and the HBO miniseries, "Mankind: The Story of All of Us". Additional film roles included the 2010 dramedy musical "The Music never stopped" and voice work in the R-rated animated comedy "Sausage Party". He was also well known for his long-running roles in the television dramas "Designing Women" and "The Edge of Night". In 2006, Holbrook was awarded the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor in recognition for his1998 portrayals of Mark Twain in a Rick Taubman-directed PBS special. Holbrook's impact on the world of global entertainment extended far beyond his celebratedMark Twain role, serving as a testament to the lasting impact of his significant contributions. He will be remembered fondly for his contributions to the art form.
