Gonzalo Gaviria, age 43, died on August 11, 1990. He leaves behind a legacy of service as a former Colombian politician and one-time President of the Colombian Senate. He was born in 1947, and served in the Colombian Senate for 14 years prior to his election as president in 1986. He also held several prominent roles in the larger Colombian political system, as well as leadership roles in local political organizations. Gaviria is remembered for his strong commitment to justice and political reform. During his time as a Senator, he fought to have the Colombian public debt restructured in order to create a more economically stable nation. He was also a staunch advocate for protections for social and political minorities, and encouraging investment in the national infrastructure. His death has been felt across the Colombian political and social landscape, and his contribution to society will not be forgotten.
