Greta Garbo, the iconic and beloved Swedish-born actress, passed away peacefully in her Manhattan home on April 15, 1990 at the age of 84. Garbo was born Greta Lovisa Gustafsson in Stockholm, Sweden, and made her way to the United States in 1925 to pursue a career in acting. She got her break with a lead role in MGM's The Torrent, and later went on to star in films such as Anna Karenina, Ninotchka, Mata Hari, and Grand Hotel. Garbo is often cited as one of the most influential figures of the silent film era and is iconic for her roles as a strong, independent female lead. Garbo has received many awards and accolades, including an honorary Oscar from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences "for her unforgettable screen performances". She was also one of the first actors to receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Throughout her life, Garbo was intensely private and was rarely seen in public after her retirement from films in 1941. She is remembered with great love and admiration by fans around the world. She will be greatly missed.
