Gregory Oliver Hines, beloved comedian and dancer, passed away on August 9, 2003 in Los Angeles, California, at the age of 57. Gregory was born in New York City on February 14, 1946. He began his career as a tap dancer, making his Broadway debut in the chorus of "The 14," a number choreographed by Sammy Davis, Jr. He became the headliner of the show shortly after. Gregory eventually left Broadway for movies and TV, starring in films such as "Running Scared," "White Nights," "Tap," and even as the voice of Ray in the animated version of "The Lion King." He also won an Emmy Award for his Buddy Mansfield character on the 1980s series "Taxi." Gregory possessed tremendous charm, wit and talent, leaving an indelible mark on the world of show business. He will be remembered for his dancing prowess, comedic improvisations and commitment to mentoring the next generation of dancers. He is survived by his wife, Negrita, and his daughter, Daria.
