Grace Hopper (1906-1992) passed away on 1st January 1992 at the age of 85. A pioneering early computer scientist, she earned a PhD in mathematics from Yale in 1934 and went on to become a professor of mathematics at Vassar College. In 1943, she joined the United States Navy Reserve, serving as a programmer and later being discharged in 1966 with the rank of Rear Admiral. In 1959, she led the team that developed the first computer compiler called A-0, and in the 1960s as the ‘mother of Cobol’, she developed Cobol, one of the first high-level programming languages. She was a leader in the field of computer programming, a senior consultant to the Department of Defense, and over the course of her life worked with some of the earliest computers. Grace Hopper was a noted innovator, mentor and public speaker who was sought-after for her insights on computer programming and the scientific world. She was greatly admired within her industry and made invaluable contributions to the advancement of computing. She will be greatly missed and fondly remembered.
