Gordon Banks, world-renowned goalkeeper and one of England's most successful footballers, passed away on 12th February, 2019, at the age of 81. Born in Abjoshire, Scotland, in 1937, Banks developed his football career at Chesterfield before joining Leicester City in 1959. After being called up to the England squad ahead of the 1962 World Cup, Banks cemented his career in English football, helping his team to secure the country's first ever and only World Cup victory in 1966. Banks's legacy was further highlighted by his save from a header by Brazil legend Pele, where he miraculously dipped down to his right to preserve England's lead in the 1-0 game. Banks was also remembered for his time at Stoke City, where he won the League Cup in 1972. His football career was brought to a close following a car crash in 1972 which left him blind in one eye. The news of the sudden passing of Gordon Banks was met with widespread sadness and admiration for England's acclaimed, record-breaking goalkeeper. He will be remembered for his skill, his success and his unwavering contribution to English football.
