Golda Meir, beloved leader of the state of Israel, passed away peacefully on Thursday, December 8, 1978 at the age of 80. She will be remembered for her dedicated service to her beloved country and her unwavering commitment to advancing the cause of peace in the Middle East. Golda was born Golda Mabovich in Kiev, Ukraine on May 3, 1898. Her parents, Moshe and Bluma, immigrated to the United States in 1906 and raised Golda and her siblings in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Golda attended teachers’ college in Madison, Wisconsin, later settling in Palestine in 1921. An early figure in the Zionist movement, Golda was elected to the Jewish Agency Executive in 1933. She served in the Knesset and as Minister of Labour and Foreign Minister prior to her appointment as Prime Minister of Israel in 1969; a role she served for almost a decade. During this time, Golda made a name for herself on the world stage, improving relations with other countries and gaining admiration from world leaders for her efforts in securing peace in the region. Golda will be remembered for her lifelong dedication to the Jewish people and to her home country of Israel. She will be remembered for her strength of character, her courage, and her tenacity. Golda will be deeply missed by all those whose lives she touched.
