Glenn Ford, a legendary veteran actor and producer, passed away on August 30, 2006 at the age of 90. Ford was an Academy Award nominee and Golden Globe winner for his iconic performances in 1954's "The Blackboard Jungle" and 1956's "The Teahouse of the August Moon." He was known for his versatility, appearing in westerns, dramas, and comedies. Born Gwyllyn Ford on May 1, 1916 in Quebec Canada, Ford began his career in the late 1930s acting in small parts on radio programs. He signed to Warner Bros. in 1939 and made his feature film debut in 1940's "The Gray Fox," under his pre-war stage name Canadian actor "G.X. Skall." During his studio contract with MGM, he starred in a succession of classic films such as "Gilda," "Ransom!" and "3:10 to Yuma." Ford worked steadily from the 1950s through the 1970s, picking up five Golden Globe Awards nominatons and being honored with a Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Throughout his career, he was also well-respected and admired for his work with various philanthropic and charitable organizations. Ford is survived by his four children and numerous generations of grandchildren and great grandchildren, who will remember him fondly for his brilliant career, compassion, and generous spirit.
