Canadian racing legend Gilles Villeneuve passed away on Thursday, May 8, 1982. He was 32 years old. Through his short career, he made a big impression on Formula One racing, contributing to the sport's worldwide popularity. Born on January 18, 1950 in Berthierville, Quebec, Gilles had an immediate affinity with cars, racing from an early age. After impressing in his local motor-sport scene, he was scouted as a test driver for Ferrari in 1977. Later that year he made his debut in the sport's premier category and quickly gained notoriety for his daring, go-for-broke driving style. Villeneuve quickly becoming established as the finest driver of his generation, and earned the admiration of fans and peers alike. He is still the only Canadian to have won a Formula One Grand Prix race, winning six times in his career. He often went against the odds, providing some of the most memorable moments in the history of the sport. Gilles Villeneuve's legacy is still felt today, inspiring many. He will be remembered by Formula One fans as a supremely talented driver, whose exceptional racing ability and technique are unprecedented.
