With great sadness we announce the passing of Gilbert Gottfried on April 12, 2022 at the age of 67. Gilbert, who went by Gil to his friends and family, was a trailblazing standup comedian and actor. His career spanned more than forty years, during which he made countless innovative and hilarious contributions to comedy. Born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, Gil started doing standup comedy at the age of fifteen. He was soon performing at comedy clubs in the area and on television programs like The Ed Sullivan Show and Saturday Night Live. Alongside his standup gigs, Gil also had a thriving career as an actor, starring in films like Beverly Hills Cop II, Problem Child, and Look Who’s Talking Too. He also lent his distinct, raspy voice to dozens of cartoons, including collaborations with The Simpsons, Futurama and Rugrats. In addition to his work in television and film, Gil was also widely recognized for his humanitarian efforts and as an advocate for causes close to his heart. He held benefit performances for charities, fundraised for AIDS research, and spoke out about animal rights. Gil was an unapologetic trailblazer, who helped pave the way for an entire generation of entertainers. He was an inspiration to comedians, actors and people everywhere. Gil’s legacy will remain in comedy for many years to come. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and fans everywhere.
