On January 21st, 1938, Georges Méliès passed away at the age of 76. Méliès was most widely known for his contribution to the field of early cinema, having begun making films in 1896 at the age of 39. His 1896 film Le Voyage Dans La Lune is best remembered for its imaginative scenes and innovative special effects; it was named one of the most influential films of all time by the Sight & Sound 2012 critics' poll. In addition to making over 500 films, Méliès also worked as an illusionist, special effects designer, and aerial photographer. He was a founding member of the Société des Ingénieurs Cinématographique and was awarded the Legion of Honor in 1929 for his dedication to the French film industry. Méliès is remembered as a visionary film-maker and magical innovator who helped define the history of cinema.
