George Steinbrenner, an American business magnate, passed away on July 13, 2010, at the age of 80. Steinbrenner is widely remembered for his leadership as head of the New York Yankees, whom he owned from 1973 until his death. He joined a group of investors to specifically purchase the team from CBS in 1973. He is credited for helping the team become one of baseball's most successful franchises, as they went on to win seven World Series titles over the course of Steinbrenner's tenure as owner. Prior to Steinbrenner's purchase, the Yankees had last won a World Series in 1962. Steinbrenner was also popular among Yankee players for his meticulous and demanding management style. He was known for making bold moves, such as hiring high-profile managers and enticing star players to join the Yankees, in his quest to bring the team back to success. In addition to his success as Yankees owner, Steinbrenner also had a long list of both professional and philanthropic achievements. He acquired the American Shipbuilding Company in 1967 and became a league owner of the USFL. Always an active participant in the community, he made generous donations to many organizations, including the Boys' Clubs of America and the Silver Shield Foundation. Steinbrenner is survived by his four children: Hal, Jessica, Jennifer and Hank. He will be remembered as a devoted leader with a profound passion for the game of baseball, and a true architect of the Yankees dynasty in the 1990s and early 2000s.
