George Orwell (1903-1950) died on January 21 at the age of 46. Born Eric Arthur Blair in India, Orwell served in the Indian Imperial Polic in Burma for five years before becoming a novelist, essayist, and journalist. He is best known for his novels Animal Farm (1945) and 1984 (1949), which are widely acclaimed classics of political fiction. He wrote extensively on politics, language, and literary style, and his works remain influential today. Orwell also wrote journalism on subjects from poverty to nuclear arms. Orwell is remembered for his unflinching commitment to political issues and his ability to use creativity and imagination to illustrate and explore questions of morality and justice.
