George Carlin, best-known for pushing boundaries and challenging societal norms through his acclaimed stand-up comedy, passed away on Sunday, June 22, 2008 at the age of 71. Carlin was one of the most influential and respected comedians of his time, earning five Grammys as well as a prestigious Mark Twain Prize for American Humor. Starting his career in radio, Carlin eventually grew his reach to include hosting his own television show, appearing in several Hollywood films, and publishing numerous books. Carlin will be fondly remembered for his scathing social commentary and incisive critiques on language, politics, religion, and popular culture. His celebrated “Seven Dirty Words” routine was the subject of a United States Supreme Court case in 1978, and his comedy continues to be deeply influential for modern comedians. Carlin is survived by his wife, Sally Wade, and his daughter, Kelly Carlin McCall.
