On Wednesday, May 30th, 1947, Georg von Trapp, Beloved father, naval captain, and founder of the Trapp Family Singers, passed away from a heart attack at his summer home in Stowe, Vermont at the age of 67. Georg von Trapp had a distinguished personal and professional life. Born on April 4, 1880 in Zara, Austria-Hungary, he graduated from the Imperial and Royal Austro-Hungarian Naval Academy in Pola in 1904 and served in the Austro-Hungarian Navy until his retirement in December 1918, rising to the rank of Kapitänleutnant. From 1922, he and his family earned a living by singing touring much of Europe. In 1937, the family emigrated to the United States just after the Nazis annexed Austria. Captain von Trapp was a devout Catholic and a tireless advocate for musical education who encouraged his children to pursue their interests musically. He was a natural leader with a strong sense of loyalty and responsibility to his family and those entrusted to his care. He is survived by his widow, Maria, his seven children and their families, and countless others around the world who have been touched by his life’s work. His generous spirit and love of music will be remembered fondly and, with his absence, he will be dearly missed.

In my end is my beginning. Mary, Queen of Scots
