On January 20th, 1983, Manuel Francisco dos Santos, known to the world as Garrincha, passed away at the age of 49. Born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, he was a professional footballer who played with Brazilian clubs including Botafogo and Corinthians and the Brazilian national team. Widely considered one of the best players of his generation -- if not the best ever -- Garrincha was lauded for his immense skill with the ball and ability to dribble past multiple defenders. He played a vital role in Brazil's 1962 and 1970 World Cup campaigns, earning him the nickname "Alegria do Povo" (Joy of the People). Garrincha was the first athlete in history to be honored by the Brazilian government with the Order of Merit of the Brazilian Government, in recognition of his contribution to sports. Garrincha's death was mourned by the many fans who enjoyed his unique talents and demeanor, leaving behind a lasting legacy in the world of football.
