Gamal Abdel Nasser, the former Egyptian President who led the 1952 Revolution, died on September 28, 1970, at the age of 52. Born in Alexandria, Egypt on January 15th, 1918, Nasser rose to prominence after leading a group of military officers in the overthrow of Egyptian monarchy in 1952. He was the leader of Egypt's revolutionary government until 1956, when he was elected President of the country. During his tenure in office, which lasted until his death in 1970, Nasser was a champion of Arab unity and anti-colonialism. He also introduced a range of social and economic reforms that aimed to reduce poverty and improve education and health care in Egypt. Under Nasser's leadership, Egypt played a prominent role in the Arab-Israeli conflict for two decades. He oversaw the nationalization of the Suez Canal in 1956, supported the Syrian government during the Syrian-Egyptian Union of 1958–1961, and engaged in a brief war with Israel in 1967 known as the Six-Day War. While Nasser is largely remembered for his impressive political achievements, his legacy will also be remembered for the lasting impact his reforms had on the economic and social makeup of Egypt. Nasser is survived by his wife Tahia Kazem, his eight children, and his three granddaughters.
