Gale Eugene Sayers, legendary Chicago Bears running back and Pro Football Hall of Famer, passed away unexpectedly on 2020-09-23 at the age of 77. The Iowa-born and University of Kansas-educated son of a Gammon College janitor, Sayers remains the youngest player inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. During his playing career in the mid-late 1960s and early 1970s, Sayers redefined the game by combining speed and grace with explosive elusiveness. In 1965, he set a team rookie record with 22 touchdowns and earned the nickname "The Kansas Comet" as he rushed for impressive career-best totals of 1,231 yards and 14 touchdowns. A six-time Pro Bowl player and two-time rushing champ, Sayers finished his career with 9,435 rushing yards, 4,956 yards receiving, and 112 total touchdowns in 68 games. He earned a place as one of professional football's all-time greats as the NFL's 25th-ranked all-time rusher. In recent years, Sayers redirected his passion for the game to his “Gale Sayers Center”, an organization committed to developing youth football skills and life skills of boys and girls in underserved Chicago neighborhoods. Sayers' death leaves a hole in the landscape of professional football. His legacy will undoubtedly inspire future generations of athletes. He is survived by his wife of more than 50 years, Ardie, three children, and his three grandchildren.

Death must be so beautiful. To lie in the soft brown earth, with the grasses waving above one’s head, and listen to silence. To have no yesterday, and no to-morrow. To forget time, to forget life, to be at peace. Oscar Wilde
