Fridtjof Nansen, world-renowned Arctic research scientist, explorer and Nobel Peace Prize Laureate, passed away on May 13, 1930 at the age of 68. Born in Norway on October 10, 1861, Nansen was educated at the university of Christiania (Oslo), graduating in 1883. Fridtjof Nansen made a name for himself as an adventurous explorer, setting the record for the furthest North during North Pole expeditions in 1888 and 1896. He also served as a diplomat during his time, acting as the Norwegian delegates to China in 1895, which established closer contacts between China, Tibet and Norway. His understanding of the ocean and its physical character was second to none, and as a result he wrote and published several important books about the polar regions and oceanography. He was also recognized for his scientific contributions in the field of animal physiology, being awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine in 1922 for his scientific research. In 1922, Nansen proposed the Nansen Passport, a travel document designed to allow refugees in Europe to travel freely. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1938 for his work as a pioneer in humanitarian assistance for refugees. Fridtjof Nansen and his legacy as an adventurous explorer and humanitarian will be remembered for years to come.
