The world lost one of its greatest artists when Frida Kahlo died on July 13, 1954 at the age of 47. The Mexican artist is widely regarded as one of the 20th century's leading female painters. Kahlo was born in Mexico City, Mexico in 1907 and rose to international fame through her iconic self-portraits. She was also an accomplished painter, working with diverse media including oil, canvas, wood, and metal. In addition to art, Kahlo was an ardent Communist supporter, a prominent voice in the Mexican muralism movement, and an inspiration to both Mexican and international feminists. Kahlo was known for her groundbreaking work and her pioneering use of the personal narrative in her art. Her body of work includes her 1955 painting "Frida and Diego Riviera", and her 1948 painting "The Two Fridas". These works featured subjects she held dear, including vivid colors, folk costumes, and her own self-image as a strong and independent woman. Kahlo became a revolutionary icon in her own lifetime, and her work remains relevant today. She fought to bring recognition to Mexican art and culture, her spirit and originality inspiring a new generation of Mexican artists. Though she is no longer with us, her legacy lives on forever.
