On July 2nd, 1993, Fred Gwynne passed away at the age of 66. He was an actor, composer, author, and visual artist who rose to recognition as Herman Munster in the CBS television show, The Munsters. Born July 10th, 1926 in New York City to Frederick Walker Gwynne and Dorothy Ficken, he attended the Recpect Hill School and graduated from the Groton School in 1944. He studied briefly at Harvard University, and then served in the US Navy during the Second World War. Gwynne first made an impression on stage and appeared in several Broadway plays including On Borrowed Time, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, and Bells Are Ringing. His portrayal of J. J. Singleton in the 1959 musical, Fiorello!, earned him a Tony Award nomination for Best Performance by a Featured Actor in a Musical. He also made an impact in the film industry by appearing in various movies including Spencer's Mountain, The Cotton Club, The Boys fom Brazil, Pet Sematary and My Cousin Vinny. On television, he starred in several shows including Car 54, Where Are You? and Cosby. In addition to his acting roles, Gwynne wrote a book about a bulldog called Happy to Be Here, and composed an operetta based off of Mark Twain's The Prince and the Pauper. Gwynne is remembered for his acting and artistic works that have impacted the film and television industry. He is survived by his three children, two grandchildren, and his brother.
