On March 19th, 1943 Frank Nitti passed away in Chicago, Illinois. He was 57 years old. Born in 1886 in the Province of Salerno, Italy, Frank Nitti moved to the United States at the age of three. He started out life as a barber and later went on to become the most famous gangster of the early 20th century. He was the leader of the Chicago Outfit, the organized crime syndicate that rose to power when Al Capone was sent to prison. Nitti developed a reputation as a strong-willed and ruthless gangster who was keenly aware of the law. He was directly involved in a number of criminal activities, including extortion, illegal gambling and bootlegging. Nitti was also known for his determination and willingness to step in and help other gangsters with their criminal activities; he was especially influential during the criminal trial of Capone. Nitti's criminal career came to an abrupt end in 1943 when he committed suicide in the wake of increased pressure from federal law enforcement. Frank Nitti was a legend in the underworld, and will be remembered as one of the most ruthless and influential organized crime figures of the early 20th century. He is survived by his wife and four children.
