Francis Bacon, renowned British artist and member of the Royal Academy, passed away on April 28th, 1992 at the age of 82. Bacon's life was deeply intertwined with both his career as an artist and his personal life. Born in Dublin, Ireland in 1909, Bacon spent his childhood in the same city before attending a school in London. He later moved on to studying at the Bedford School and later the Royal Academy of a Arts, but eventually dropped out and pursued his career as an artist. His career developed his distinctive style of figuration and he became known as one of the leading figures of the Pop Art movement. He is known for his often haunting and emotive portrayals in a variety of mediums, such as painting, photography and printmaking. Bacon's works are recognized worldwide, often referencing personal biography, ancient mythology and current events. In total, Bacon enjoyed a dynamic career in the gallery, completing numerous solo and group exhibitions at galleries and institutions all over the world. Among his many accolades, Bacon won the Grand Prize at the São Paulo Art Biennial in 1975 and the Kiko Lifetime Achievement Award at the Venice Biennale in 2001. The legacy that Bacon has left behind will no doubt continue to be remembered throughout both art history and contemporary culture.
