Franchot Tone, 63, a prominent American actor best known for his roles in movies such as The Lives of a Bengal Lancer (1935) and Mutiny on the Bounty (1935), passed away on 18 September 1968. Tone was born in Niagara Falls, New York, on 27 February 1905 to Frank and Grace Cochrane Tone. He graduated from Harvard University in 1925 and soon afterwards began his career on the stage. It was here that he received the caliber of recognition for his acting which lead to successful roles in films. Tone's most significant contributions to the film industry include Danger (1935), The Gilded Lily (1935), The Bride came C.O.D. (1941), Seven Days to Noon and Bad Day at Black Rock (both released in 1955). Tone received critical acclaim for his portrayal of first mate Roger Byam in the 1935 movie, Mutiny on the Bounty, and was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. Tone was also the co-composer of the movie's theme song, "Lovely Nancy". Throughout his acting career, Franchise Tone was nominated for numerous awards, and his legacy will live on through his works. He will be missed.
