On April 21 1971, François Duvalier, 64, passed away. Born in 1907, François studied medicine and law in France, and became a doctor. Returning to Haiti in 1934, he was a well-known and politically active figure. He served in the Haitian government in various capacities, eventually becoming President of Haiti in 1957. He was President until 1971, when he was succeeded by his son Jean-Claude. Throughout his life, François was an influential leader in Haitian public life. He will be remembered for his efforts in health, education, and archaeology for his country. François is survived by his wife Simone, three sons Jean-Claude, Jean-Maxime, and François Nicolas, and other family members.
