Federico Fellini, the Italian filmmaker and Academy Award-winning director, passed away on October 31, 1993, at the age of 73, in Rome, Italy. Fellini is renowned for his memorable films that were known for their dreamy, surrealist fantasy sequences. During his career, Fellini directed 13 feature films that were shown all over the world, ranging from foreign language art house pictures to mainstream hits. Fellini won four Academy Awards, including an honorary Oscar in 1993. He also won the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival twice for La Dolce Vita (1960) and 8½ (1963). In addition, Fellini was recognized with five BAFTA awards, plus three César Awards and a Grammy. But beyond the awards, Fellini has left a legacy for generations of filmmakers with his trademark visual invention, slapstick humor, and magical realism. A master of the art of filmmaking, Fellini is celebrated today in his native Italy and around the world. Federico Fellini will be remembered for his contribution to the art of cinema.
