Eunice Kennedy Shriver (1921-2009) died on August 11, 2009, at the age of 88. She was born in Brookline, Massachusetts on July 10, 1921 to Joseph and Rose Kennedy. Eunice was an American philanthropist and a member of the Kennedy family. She made considerable contributions to the Special Olympics movement, founded in 1968, believing deeply in promoting acceptance and inclusion of people with intellectual disabilities. She was passionate about helping others and provided ability and hope to those with greatest need. In 1984, she was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom. In addition, she received numerous prestigious awards in recognition of her activism and activism for the Special Olympics, including the Laureus Award for Courage, the Lady of Manresa Medal of Recognition and Service and the Vatican's Domus Mariae Medal. Eunice is survived by her husband, Sargent Shriver, and five children – Maria, Timothy, Mark, Anthony and Robert. She is also survived by 19 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. She will be remembered as a caring and compassionate person with a deep commitment to helping others. Her legacy promotes the inclusion of those with intellectual disability and the power of sports to build bridges of friendship. Eunice will be remembered fondly.
