British comedian Eric Morecambe sadly passed away on May 28, 1984, aged 58. Born John Eric Bartholomew in Morecambe, Lancashire, Eric quickly became a household name, and was best known for his comedy partnership with Ernie Wise. Having made his first television appearance aged 12, Eric's career as a comedian spanned five decades, and his television appearances included The Comedians, Starburst, Seaside Special, and the seminal The Morecambe & Wise Show. Given the freedom to work in any way they chose, their many sketches became legendary, and Eric and Ernie became television superstars. Widely revered, the pair won countless awards, including numerous London Film Critics awards, and the BAFTA Fellowship Award in 1984. At the time of his death, Eric Morecambe was not only considered a comedy giant, but one of the nation's best-loved entertainers. He will be sorely missed.
