Enver Hoxha, former leader of communist Albania, passed away on April 11, 1985 at the age of 76. Enver was born on October 16, 1908 in Gjirokastër, Albania. He studied in France, Belgium and the University of Montpellier before returning to Albania in 1939 to teach history at the Liceu high school in Shkodër. During World War II, Enver became heavily involved with the Albanian resistance movement. In 1945, he was named Prime Minister and Chairman of the Democratic Front of Albania. As Prime Minister, Enver brought about sweeping political changes, turning Albania into a communist state and launching extensive land reforms. He established close ties with the Soviet Union and China, and during his reign Albania became an isolated nation. He was the leader of the Party of Labor of Albania from 1945 until his death in 1985. During his time as President, Enver was known for his strictness and devotion to communism. His reign came to an end with his death in April 1985. He had been in office since 1944 and his death marked the end of over 40 years of rule. Enver Hoxha is remembered as a leader who shaped the course of modern Albania and a strong proponent of communism. He will be remembered fondly by those who knew him and respected his dedication to his beliefs.
