Emiliano Zapata, legendary revolutionary leader, passed away on April 10th, 1919, at the young age of 39. Born in Morelos, Mexico in 1880, Zapata was raised in a rural farming village and developed a fierce passion for activism early in life. He spent his adolescence advocating for the rights of farmers in his rural community and eventually expanded his reach throughout Mexico. Zapata is remembered for leading The Mexican Revolution in 1910, which was an armed conflict and social movement fought to overthrow the then-dictatorship of President Porfirio Diaz. He was an effective leader throughout the Mexican Revolution, leading campaigns in his home state of Morelos as well as throughout other parts of Mexico. Most famously, he is known for negotiating the Plan de Ayala in 1911 and leading the Liberation Army of the South in an effort to improve the rights and quality of life for rural farmers. He was killed at the age of 39 during a raid in Morelos. Zapata will be remembered for his dedication to ending oppression and championing the rights of the poorest people of Mexico.
