On June 20, 1995, the world lost a renowned writer and philosopher with the passing of Emil Cioran at the age of 84. A Romanian born in 1911 in the city of Răşinari, Cioran was well known for his philosophical works in French spoken in a distinctively distinct style. He was noted for his cynical outlook which brought a critical eye to philosophy, religion and politics. His work was deeply personal, often having an autobiographical feel, and focused heavily on themes of suffering, decay, and despair. His best-known works focus on topics like nihilism, existence, and the tragic condition of humanity. Emil Cioran's writing contributed greatly to 20th-century philosophy, earning him various honors and awards throughout his lifetime, including the Nobel Prize Of Literature. Not only a philosopher and literary figure, Cioran was also a cultural critic in Romania, where his work was praised and respected for its insight and scope. He will be forever remembered in the annals of philosophy as one of the most influential and important writers of the 20th century.
