Today we mourn the death of Elsa Einstein, born August 18th, 1876, who died on December 20th, 1936. She was a remarkable person and remarkable woman. Elsa was born in Hechingen, Germany, the daughter of Pauline and Hermann Einstein. She graduated in 1901 from the Institute for Rhetoric in Frankfurt and married physicist Max Koch, but divorced five years later and returned to Germany. In 1916 she married her half-brother Albert, and the two had estrangement between 1933 and 1935, reconciling only a few months before her death in 1936. She had two sons with Max Koch, and two stepchildren with Albert. She was an accomplished author and a regular contributor to newspapers, such as The German Week, and books on philosophy. Elsa was remembered for her wit and her ability to solve research problems quickly. She was clever, elegant, and very well read. Elsa Einstein's death is mourned by her friends, family, and colleagues around the world. May she rest in peace.
