On Wednesday, May 16th, 1957, Eliot Ness, former Bureau of Prohibition chief in Cleveland, US Treasury Agent, and former director of public safety in Cleveland, passed away at the age of 54. Eliot grew up in the Midwest, and attended the University of Chicago where he studied law enforcement. He began his career with the Bureau of Prohibition in 1927, and quickly became a leader in the department. In 1929, Ness and his team of handpicked agents, known as the Untouchables, were tasked with bringing down the notorious Chicago mob leader, Al Capone. Though their mission was considered a failure, Eliot's pursuit of justice and unwavering determination were unrivaled, and he was respected for his diligence. Following his career with the Bureau of Prohibition, Eliot became Director of Public Safety in Cleveland in 1935. Here, he worked to eliminate gangsters and organized crime, and made Cleveland a city of progress and opportunity for all.
