Edwina Cynthia Annette Ashley, Countess Mountbatten of Burma, died on 21 February 1960, aged 58. An English socialite and philanthropist, Lady Mountbatten was born on 27 August 1901 in London to the wealthy Conservative politician Wilfred William Ashley and his wife Margaret. Inheriting a fortune from her father's copper shipments she was educated at home before being presented to King George V and Queen Mary as a debutante at the Court. During the Second World War, Lady Mountbatten served as a nurse in the Women's Auxilary Air Force. After the conflict, she dedicated her life to philanthropy and aid projects, working with a number of important charities, such as the St John’s Ambulance, the Princess Mary's Royal Air Force Nursing Service and Save the Children Foundation. She was also closely involved with the International Red Cross, the United Nations Association, Apex Clubs International, and the Order of St. John. In 1922 she married Louis, Viscount Mountbatten of Burma, the eldest son and heir apparent of the 1st Marquess of Milford Haven, whom she had known since childhood. The couple had two children, Patricia, who died in 2017, and David, born in 1947. Lady Mountbatten will be remembered for her energetic and tireless efforts in making the world a better place and her generous and kind-hearted nature.
